The Countdown Begins!!

If you've visited the website -- you know we posted the goal date for online registration. January 3. See -- we improve EVERY YEAR!! And the truth is -- with the timing of Christmas (which I understand cannot be changed) -- this is really the best we can do.

As soon as it is official -- I WILL POST IT HERE AND ON FACEBOOK...

I AM GETTING SO EXCITED about the 2013 Sewing & Stitchery Expo. I look forward to seeing some of my sewing-sister-friends...Charlotte and I met for the first time many years ago in Michigan -- right? I ran into her last year at the Yahoo dinner -- it was a cold and miserable night...but we were so excited about the show -- the weather didn't matter!

Charlotte found a verb tense problem on the website -- (did we correct that yet?)And I got a GREAT picture of you with Sandra Betzina, too...
She was reading the page about the Pillowcase Patrol -- and YES -- the Mary Bridge Children's Hospital is the official charity for the 2013 Sewing & Stitchery Expo.
Linda B. is one of our avid fans. She posts regularly on Facebook -- and ALWAYS brings a smile to her sewing, whether it's sock monkey's, aprons or pillowcases...
AND WHAT A NICE SURPRISE! Claire made a jewelry case for me -- and I have used it SO MANY TIMES. I don't know if Claire and Jolene will be coming to the show this year -- will you be there?
Last year was such a special year for me -- with my actual very own sewing sisters -- Deborah, Ronda and Barb. (she is adopted, not biological)..
They're not coming this year and I miss them already...thank goodness there are nearly 30,000 other fun-loving sewing sisters coming to Puyallup!! I am sure you will keep me busy, inspired and entertained.

It's going to be a GREAT SHOW this year...

Snail Mail Vs. Online Registration

It is so true -- a PICTURE IS WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS. In this picture, you can see the a small fraction of the tens of thousands of printed tickets.

I am receiving a lot of questions about whether it is to your advantage to register online or try to jump the gun by sending in a snail mail registration. I am going to tell you everything I know -- and then you can decide for yourself.

First of all -- snail mail registrations receive no advantage over online registrations. Because we have set aside a certain percentage of tickets for snail mail orders. For example -- if 30% of our registrations came last year via snail mail -- then 30% of the available tickets have been set aside.   (Believe me -- this is a diminishing number...as more and more of you use the ONLINE system.)So, a three-needle class that can accommodate 30 students -- 10 would be snail mail and 20 would be from online registrations. This is the only fair way to do it -- and, as you know -- many of those classes SELL OUT ON THE FIRST DAY.

Here's what happens when your registration comes in:

  • The snail mail orders are put into a pile, AS THEY ARE RECEIVED. Each order must be keyed into the online registration software so that we can keep an accurate count of available tickets. These orders do serve as an early test of the system -- but when the percentage of "snail mail" tickets are gone -- they're gone. (The remaining tickets go to online registrants.)

  • The online registrations are printed out.  Although you know the minute you register whether or not you "got" every class you wanted -- we still have to pull tickets for every seminar and/or special event you purchased.

Whether you register via snail mail or by using the online system -- each ticket order is handled by a real person who will call or send an email if they have questions. They pull your tickets, check it twice, and process every order envelope as quickly and correctly as possible.

So -- the decision is yours. There are pros and cons to both systems. The online handling fee is $8 per order. We do allow you to pool your orders -- and that's a small price to pay if you want to know immediately whether or not you got the classes you signed up for.

Also, the "percentage" of tickets for snail mail registrants is a diminishing number. The first year, only about 40% of you used the online system. Last year, that number was closer to 70%. This year, it could be 80% or more.

We work hard to be as fair as we can possibly be -- and we wish every single person could get every class they wanted. But it's not a perfect world -- and some classes sell out very quickly because they are HOT, HOT, HOT....
Whatever method you choose to register is FINE WITH US.
We have the best speakers in the industry coming to Puyallup and they want you to take their seminars and learn something new -- to go home inspired to SEW...

Happy New Year!!

MERRY CHRISTMAS....did you get the Registration Brochure in the mail?  If not -- please go to the new website: sewexpo.com to read about WHAT'S HAPPENING AT THE 2013 SHOW

We have the BIGGEST ROSTER OF SEMINARS AND CLASSES of any consumer sewing show in America. It takes a village, that's for sure!

One of the biggest improvements this year on the website is that we have posted ALL THE BIOGRAPHIES of our talented, world-class sewing faculty. So be sure to go to the page where the Speaker Bios are posted...

Mary Collen won last year's IPCA sewing contest -- this year, they are STEPPING UP THEIR GAME.  For one thing -- they will announce the WINNER at our show -- AND FOR ANOTHER THING -- the winner gets a TRIP!! Their event is called Ticket to Paradise...Visit www.patterncompanies.com to read all about it....

These pictures are just a random sampling of GIRLS HAVING FUN...

AT THE BIGGEST SEWING PARTY IN AMERICA...

But I know your #1 question is.....

WHEN CAN I REGISTER FOR CLASSES???

Be patient...they are inputting all the information, even as we speak...and testing the online registration...

When Online Registration is activated, I will post it here -- and also on Facebook...

It will be soon. But not until after the first of the year. Last year, we opened online registration on January 7 -- and THAT WORKED FINE, NOW, DIDN'T IT??

I know you're anxious. We are, too!!

HAPPY NEW YEAR...SEE YOU AT THE SHOW...

Only 8 Days Until Christmas

Christmas is just ONE WEEK AWAY. We decided that maybe you have WAY MORE IMPORTANT THINGS to worry about this week....lol...so seeing the 2013 Registration Brochure for the first time shouldn't really be such a big deal, eh?

Sorry for the false alarm, people. Believe me -- you were not the only one who went to the Sew Expo website this morning, excited about seeing the Registration Brochure. I'm not sure what happened -- but as soon as I know -- I'll put it here so you will know, too.

But I was delighted to hear from so many of you this morning (yes, this is sarcasm)...and it is unfortunate that I had previously published my personal cellphone number. ugh.

If I had a picture of the new cover, I WOULD POST IT HERE. So sorry....

As soon as I know what's going on -- I'll let you know. Believe me -- THE BROCHURE IS READY TO GO -- I know that -- I've seen it. So it's probably just a snafu with the web master...maybe he missed the memo....

I KNOW YOU ARE ANXIOUS...WE ARE, TOO..!!

Thanks for the calls and emails....

Hello! So excited that it will soon be Expo time once again. My daughter Danielle Dahm, granddaughter Ciara Dahm, and my self have attended for many years. Ciara will be 21 on Feb. 26 and has been attending with us since she was 10. Last year she missed as she is at WSU and missed the timing. This year she is attending with us. I am going to add a photo of us (my hubby always takes a photo before we leave for Expo) that he took the year the Charity event was the red/pink theme... Happy Sewing! Sharon Bosser

Online Registration

You WANTED online registration.  You insisted on it. It was the one BIG THING that came up in the suggestion box over and over again. We came, kicking and screaming, to online registration. And you were RIGHT. It is wonderful. You love it.We love it. You know IMMEDIATELY whether or not you got the classes you signed up for -- and plan your Expo time accordingly.

However -- the way we do online registration is very different from most consumer shows. Because of the sheer size of our audience -- it is necessary to TICKET every seminar. That means we STILL maintain a brick and mortar ticket office ramping up to the show. In December, we rent the temporary office space and set up our rented office equipment. In addition, we print thousands of tickets -- which are organized by number and by day. We get our computers and printers out of the paid storage unit and WE HIRE THE TICKET OFFICE STAFF. These workers are not volunteers -- they are paid professionals who work for us year after year and they do a wonderful job. These employees come to the office and print off every online ticket order.  With the help of the CTA volunteers -- they pull the individual seminar and event tickets, put them into an envelope to be sent to your home. They phone you if they have questions or if there is a conflict or problem.

(Katy is in this old picture -- I know I have WAY BETTER PICTURES of the ticket office staff -- from more recent years -- but they are buried in my avalanche of 30,000 pictures...yikes...I was lucky to find this one!!)

And, of course, now -- on top of all that -- now we also have the additional expense of building and maintaining the ONLINE REGISTRATION itself. We pay computer specialists to do that job. Every class and event must be properly linked and set up with the secure credit card processing site -- and we pay for all that.
(this is actually a photo of the As The World Turns cast -- it isn't easy to find pictures, people!)

Online registration has added thousands of dollars to our budget and we COMPLETELY, TOTALLY UNDERESTIMATED the cost of all this. For the first two years, we set a $4 handling fee. But after doing the ACTUAL MATH last year -- we realized that didn't even come close to covering the real cost.

So this year, the handling fee will be $8 per order. Please understand we keep the costs down whenever possible. But good people do not work for free. And this is a VERY BIG JOB. This increase in the handling fee is necessary to simply cover the cost.

Remember -- this charge is per ORDER -- not per ticket. AND -- we do allow you to "pool" your ticket purchases. So the $8 handling fee, amortized out over the purchase of many tickets -- is still A HUGE BARGAIN..!!

Thank you for your understanding -- I'm giving you this heads-up so you can start to strategize your Sew Expo registration. Again -- the brochure will be going UP ON THE WEBSITE (Sewexpo.com) on December 17. And the online registration will go live, as always, the first week in January.

Another Big Announcement

If you read my personal blog over at Rita's Sew Fun -- you know that I was at the new Original Sewing & Quilt Expo in Tinley Park last week. I was delighted to be able to wear my newest, latest recycled t-shirt maxi dress (yes, I am still obsessed)...
I was there for a meeting with Rhonda Pierce of Schmetz Needles -- we had to talk about the new Schmetz Sew-cial Blogger Bootcamp. And right there in the lobby -- we ran into Emma Seabrook!!Of course, Emma is famous for her sewing-on-knit classes and I could hardly wait to shop in her booth.  WHERE DO YOU THINK I bought the fabric for the skirt of my new dress?  She always finds the most beautiful knits....

I wanted to see the Art Quilt show they had hanging in Tinley Park. Because our Quilter's Night Out speakers --- Laura and Frieda belong to the Chicago Art Quilter's...

The Art Quilter's had a special challenge for Tinely Park show...and the quilts were AMAZING. So full of spirit and whimsey.

Which brings me to my BIG ANNOUNCEMENT...about the 2013 Quilter's Night OUT...

It is with great pleasure that I am now able to tell you -- it's official -- the sponsor for the 2013 Quilter's Night OUT will be -- the Janome Sewing Machine Company.  Of course, since I already told you that in the November newsletter -- this may not be the big shocking surprise you were hoping for.  Hey -- it's hard for me to keep track of what you do and don't know, people.
Here's one of my latest chuckles from Pinterest...
Both Frieda and Laura do all their creative quilting on their Janome sewing machines -- and THEY KNOW ART QUILTS. If the Janome announcement isn't big news to you this morning -- how about this...
For the first time -- EMMA SEABROOK will be coming to Puyallup!! I AM SO EXCITED for you!! And for her! It's going to be a great show...

WHO ARE the Two Hot Fuser Chicks??

We pride ourselves on hosting the biggest and best evening events in the sewing industry. We know that every year -- you look forward to Quilter's Night OUT -- and hundreds of you have NEVER MISSED ONE.

You loved Kaye Wood, Eleanor Burns, Mark Lipinski, Ricky Timms and Alex Anderson. We always have our ear to the ground -- looking for next year's big hit.

According to your comments, many of you are interested in learning more about ART QUILTS. Hey -- ME, TOO!! I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the whimsy and fun of art quilts.

So -- it is with GREAT JOY that I announce the 2013 Quilter's Night OUT. (drumroll, please)...

Laura Wasilowski and Frieda Anderson -- THE HOT FUSER CHICKS...

They dye their own fabric -- and their original designs hang in the most prestigious quilt shows in America...

They have a wonderful sense of humor and two different points of view...

To convey the full extent of their whimsical approach to textile, art and quilts -- I thought you would enjoy this page from Laura's website:

The Chicago School of Fusing: A Definitive History

The Chicago School of Fusing was founded in 1997 by Robbi Eklow to advocate and advance the fine art of fusing. Dedicated fusers- Robbi Eklow, Laura Wasilowski, and Melody Johnson- realized a need to proclaim their profession in an educational setting. They began teaching the fine art of fusing to a few forward thinking art quilters. They now host extension classes throughout the world.
As Dean of Corrections, Laura Wasilowski presents classes on fusing etiquette and deportment. Dean of Music, Melody Johnson, leads the Glee Club in rousing school songs such as "I'm Proud to be a Fuser from Chicago". Emily Parson acts as instructor in quilt exhibit, promotion, and sales. Frieda Anderson was hired for her entrepreneurial spirit, expertise in web site design, and the ability to calm everyone down. Jane Sassaman was added to give the school some class. And our newest faculty member, Anne "Fiesta" Lullie, was hired for her party skills.

A Quick Campus Tour

The imaginary Chicago School of Fusing campus was first located in an aromatic cheese factory on Chicago's East Side. Later the campus was relocated to the Flat Iron Building (FIB) in the heart of Chicago. Campus facilities now cover several blocks on the famous Chicago River with daily ferry service to train stations and Lake Michigan. The Fusitorium hosts the majority of classes. Technical classes in iron repair and maintenance are held in the The Iron Workers United Building or IWUB. The Flat Iron Student Services (FISS) building houses a large ice machine and Band-Aid vending service near the Nurse's office.

General fusing supplies and steel toed boots in a variety of sizes can be found at the Hot Stuff Bookstore and Uniform Shop. Students are housed in the Black and Decker Dormitories located adjacent to the newest addition to the campus, the Rowenta Sports Arena. Here, the Iron Maidens Press Squad proudly represents their school and the Fusettes Glee Club sing the CSOF fight song, "Press on Chicago Fuse" composed by John Philip Fusa.

Our Mission
The mission of the Chicago School of Fusing faculty is to endow the school with a distinctive spirit, to foster a deeper respect for fusing, and to instill in educated persons a dedication to the fine art of fusing. Individuals seeking admission to the Chicago School of Fusing must first demonstrate the ability to locate Chicago on a map and to have had some experience with an iron. Undergraduate applications may be obtained by contacting the Office of Undergraduate Admissions or by contacting a faculty member. Off campus courses are available upon request.

OH, YEAH -- this is gonna be fun!! Next week I have ANOTHER EXCITING ANNOUNCEMENT about the 2013 Quilter's Night OUT -- and I think you will be very pleased...

2013 Quilter's Night OUT

A BIG part of my job is traveling around the country, going to other shows, trying to find out what's new and who's hot....
Hey -- it's a tough job but SOMEBODY'S GOTTA DO IT...
Because, for one thing -- we are known for the BEST, MOST EXCITING, SPECIAL EVENTS in the sewing industry. It's one of the things that sets us apart from the other shows...we have a beautiful room -- the Expo Runway -- that accommodates an audience of 800+...and NOBODY does it better than we do...
I'm picking this random picture of Laura Mendoza and her Mom -- AND -- can you see one of my Sew Expo jackets?? I GAVE AWAY FOUR OF THEM last year...all with embroidery and the show logo that John Deere did for us in 2010...
Anyway -- back to my point.... OUR EVENING EVENTS ROCK THE ENTIRE TOWN...You end up talking about them for weeks and months after the show is over. Our evening events -- Friday Night LIVE and Quilter's Night OUT are high energy, entertaining, and in many cases -- life-altering.

Last year, right after the show --  here I was with Ricky Timms...
The way Ricky combined his music with his love of quilting -- and his ability to TELL A STORY...well -- it was an evening many of us will never forget.

And it was a thrill to share that night with so many of my sewing sisters...my REAL sisters -- Deborah and Ronda -- are still talking about that night. (our fake sister, Barb, probably is to, but I just haven't seen her since Sew Expo...she doesn't call, she doesn't write...)
Next week, I'll be making the BIG ANNOUNCEMENT about our 2013 Quilter's Night OUT. Once again, we search for NEW topics and NEW speakers...and we always LISTEN to what you say. Our audience. You are the BEST...and you are GONNA LOVE IT...

YES that is my real phone number...

So, here I am, sitting in the middle of my Iowa cornfield, minding my own business -- and my cellphone starts ringing. I almost forgot that I put my REAL CELL PHONE number in the October show newsletter. (THAT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A JOKE, Janet!!)

Anyway -- I have enjoyed with visiting with some of my Sew Expo sewing sisters today! Yes -- it's going to be a great show -- and yes -- I FORGOT to write a new blog post after telling everybody there would be a FRESH POST EVERY MONDAY...yikes...the pickles sound amazing, Ruth -- and I am NOT TIRED of sewing recycled t-shirt dresses, Jan!!

Here's a picture of Nancy Zieman and Steve Jeffery. This summer, Nancy broke her leg. UGH. But I've seen her since then -- and she is FINE, ABSOLUTELY FINE...so not to worry -- she'll be at Sew Expo and she has something very special planned for Friday Night LIVE. Although, I cannot imagine how Babylock is going to top themselves. Last year they gave away FIVE SEWING MACHINES...

This is a random picture of the May Planning Meeting -- a few of the committee chairs discussing the 2013 Sew Expo. Next week I'm going to blog about the BIG CHANGES in our photo policy!! All good news, people!!

Speaking of photos -- This is a picture of our new graphic designer. Andrew did the new design for the e-newsletter. Right now, he's working up the Regisration Brochure. Yes --poor Andrew...he had NO IDEA what he was getting himself into, eh??

Today I got a lot of questions about the Schmetz Blogger's Conference. STAY TUNED, people! Next Monday, I'll blog all about it. (it's only fair, eh?)  Rhonda Pierce is still working out the final details...it's going to be so much fun!!

Sticking with my photo theme...here's a completely pointless random picture of the green lamp I found at the Goodwill store. Awesome, eh??
Thanks for stopping by to read the official Show Blog! 2013 is going to be the BIGGEST SHOW YET...

The Best of the Best

Ann and Joanne have been reviewing HUNDREDS OF APPLICATIONS from speakers for the 2013 Sew Expo. THIS IS SO MUCH FUN. (For me -- not for them, of course.)

It is a tough job to pick the best of the best...and we never know what the "HOT" topic is going to be... Of course, Libby Lehman is always thinking out of the box...I can hardly wait to see what she's proposing for next year...

And our SERGER CLASSES are always huge hits. Candace Jewett came last year even though she was recovering from a surgery...I'm telling you -- our speakers and teachers are the BEST -- and they always go that extra mile...

We are always on the lookout for new speakers AND new products or inventions.  Last year, the new vendor "Sew & Go" provided these rolling cutting tables for the machine classrooms.  Nancy Fosgram was a new vendor -- she brought those great little folding extension tables/ironing boards -- and our attendees embraced that product BIGTIME...I wonder what her new thing will be for 2013?

Trust me -- every designer, writer and sewing star in the country is working on the NEW STUFF THEY'LL BRING TO PUYALLUP...Last year, Dana Bontrager (a member of the IPCA)was part of the new event -- Midnight Magic -- a sewing competition -- which Mary Collen WON...with this stunning work...

Midnight Magic was a huge success -- and next year it will be back -- bigger and better than ever... Oh, yeah -- it's a busy time, people!! MARK YOUR CALENDARS. The 2013 Sew Expo is February 28, March 1-3, 2013...

How To Set Up Your Own Etsy Store

One of the BEST parts of my job is that I get to attend other sewing shows-- because I want to know what's happening out there -- who's hot and what's new.

Recently, I attended the wonderful Wisconsin Quilt Expo in Madison. Of course, it is always a pleasure to see Nancy Zieman -- here she is with Rhonda Pierce of Schmetz Needles. Rhonda and I were in Wisconsin having meetings about the brand new 2013 Schmetz Bloggers Conference (more details to follow)...which is going to take place right BEFORE the 2013 Sewing and Stitchery Expo.

Rhonda was signed up to take a class about setting up YOUR OWN ETSY STORE. Hey -- that's a great idea!! I've been an Etsy customer for years -- maybe I need a store!! I COULD SELL T-SHIRT MAXI DRESSES!!

Angela is the daughter of Char Jorgenson -- Quilting in the Heartland. HEY -- I WONDER IF SHE'LL COME TO PUYALLUP?? What a great class that would be, eh?? I'd better get busy sucking up to her right now...

HEY -- this is Rita Luck if I ever lived it!! Not only is Angela coming to Puyallup -- but I was able to get Ann Sagawa ON THE PHONE -- and she was just putting the finishing touches on the class schedule!! HOLY COW...I AM SO EXCITED. Her class is amazing. She set up an Etsy store because everybody wanted the embroidered hoodies she was making for her daughter's wedding. To make a long (and very interesting) story a little shorter -- she sold over $100,000 worth of merchandise in the next 14 months.....because she CRACKED THE GOOGLE CODE...

AND YES, PEOPLE -- WE HAVE HER. Angela will be a featured teacher at the Schmetz Blogger Conference (more details soon) -- AND she will also be teaching her Etsy class at Sew Expo.
